COSMOPOLITAN BIRDS HAVE A WORLDWIDE DISTRIBUTION

Recently I was asked about the worlds most widely distributed species.

So I looked into the birds, and found the following list of close to cosmopolitan bird species:

  1. Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus
  2. Osprey (Pandion haliaetus
  3. Barn Owl (Tyto alba
  4. Gull-billed Tern (Gelochelidon nilotica
  5. Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis)
  6. Great Egret (Ardea alba)
  7. House Sparrow (Passer domesticus
  8. Rock Pigeon (Columba livia)

Of course the last two species have been introduced in many parts of the world, and I think that none of these species occurs on Antarctica. So there are no truly worldwide distributed cosmopolitan bird species

Cosmopolitan mammal species are related to the distribution of people. They include the most common domesticated mammals, like the cow, horse, pig, chicken, dog, cat, that have been actively distributed by people. Others species have followed people at pest. They include the Brown Rat (Rattus norvegicus), the House Mouse ()

  1. Brown Rat,
  2. Homo sapience,
  3. and the common domesticated mammals.

Cosmopolitan plant species are:

  1. Daisy, Taraxicum oficinalis. It is a complex species which is devided into many species by some. In the latter case it would not be a cosmopolitan species
  2. Creeping Woodsorrel (Oxalis corniculata), also called Procumbent Yellow-sorrel or Sleeping Beauty
  3. Shepherd's-purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris), which has spread worldwide as a weed with seeds of crops.

Cosmopolitan Artropods include:

  1. woodlouse spider (Dysdera crocata)
  2. housefly (also house fly, house-fly or common housefly), Musca domestica
  3. Southern Green Stink bug (Nezara viridula), believed to originate from Ethiopia has spread across the world as a crop pest.

Of course, these are just some of the best known terrestrial species. There are many more marine species, due to the fact that distribution across the oceans is so much easier than over land.

Send us an email with any other cosmopolitan species that you know off.
