GARDEN BIRDS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM AND EUROPE

How to attract the 50 most common garden birds in Great Britain and Europe: Ideas and suggestions on how to attract birds to your garden

On this page you will find the 50 most common garden birds for Great Britain and Europe. The page is still under construction and more info will follow shortly

Garden Birds General How to attract Nest box
  Barn Owl

Not truly a garden bird, but a great inhabitant of accessible cavities and semi-protected platforms on (usually old) buildings.

  Blackbird

One of the most common garden birds in Europe. The male may start singing as early as 2 hours before dawn. It mostly lives on insects and worms in the summer but in winter it does not shy away from helping itself on your birdfeeder.

  Feral Pigeon
  Goldcrest
  Goldfinch
  Great Tit
  Great Spotted Woodpecker

Insect feeder that is becoming increasingly more accustomed to visiting gardens and birds feeders.

Eats a variety of seeds. Is quite fond of seeds in solid grease

  Greenfinch
  Grey Heron

A questionable delight is the Grey Heron in your garden. While graceful and pretty, the gold fishes in your pond have no chance against this great fish eater.

The fishes in your pond may be quite attractive

  House Martin
  House Sparrow
  Jackdaw
  Jay
  Long-tailed Tit
  Magpie
  Mallard

One visitor you don't want in your pond or birdbath is the mallard. It plows up the entire pond, eating your water plants, eutrophiating your water with its droppings.

American and Australian authors have put a great level of detail on precise sizes of nestboxes, but in reality, to most birds it probably does not really matter all that much. After all, they depend on what nature makes available to them, of for that matter what you make available to them. Them most critical thing is the diameter of the entrance hole. If you target a certain bird species, you should not make it any larger than its minimum size, as you want to avoid competition from birds that can get through a larger hole. So the British Trust for Ornithology has set some standardized dimensions:

Standard sizes of nestboxes

Size Base Height
Very Small 80 x 80 80
Small 100 x 100 150
Medium 130 x 130 200
Large 200 x 200 450
Very Large 250 x 250 600

Standard Mounting Heights:

Low: about 1 - 2 m

Medium: about 2 - 5 m

High: more than 5 m

Nevertheless, we will give dimensions where they are available as they will help you decide what measures you can use, but remember, if your wood is slightly off, don't hesitate to adapt to the materials that you have. No bird comes along and will check the dimensions of your nestbox.

* This is an introduced species and on the one hand we should not promote it. On the other hand, there is no way we can stop it from spreading, so me may have to live with the reality. It is a fun bird to watch, being very sociable. So if you can't resist the temptation to hang up a nestbox, these are its dimensions.

This website is about birds, nature, conservation and the passion for nature. Let me tell you a bit about myself.

On this website, you can find the bird checklists of all countries of the world: Just go to http://www.birdlist.org/site/regions.htm. In many of them you can find the bird names in its native language as well. But there is much more. There are pictures of nature, great tools for conservation, information on national parks and other nature reserves, an on-line book on ecology and nature conservation, free software for downloading, technical reports for those who want it. In order to find your way through the 2000 interlinked web pages on nature and conservation, please go to the site map. Thank you for visiting this page on the garden birds of Great Britain and Europe.
