EXPLANATION OF THE DATA FIELDS: SOURCES This card details the main sources which were checked for this stack. The principal sources originally were the book review sections of three journals: The Auk, Wilson Bulletin and the Ibis. They have been irregularly checked from 1975 on with only The Auk being regularly looked at. The periodical literature review of the Auk (now the Recent Literature Supplement) has also been checked. An * indicates that the source was checked many years ago before this stack was created; possibly not all interesting references were noted. ABA CATALOGUE The Spring 1993 American Birding Association Catalogue was checked for all interesting entries and prices given are cited where appropriate. All new entries from the ABA Fall 1993 and Spring and Fall 1994 catalogues entered. These include field guides, handbooks, state bird books and bird finding guides. Information should be quite complete for all major publications at a country or state level; more local references have been included whenever possible. References prior to 1950 are generally not included. Foreign language publications, other than French, Spanish and Portuguese, are usually not included unless they are of exceptional interest. See the "Sources card" for information on where references have been obtained (type "sources" as a keyword from the "Find" card).In the comments section, basic information is included on the reference as well as availability information. References to reviews are noted and pertinent comments from these are frequently noted. Finding a reference could be easier if the system of entering keywords is understood; see detailed text below. Price: prices quoted in the comments section are intended to be a rough indication of what the price is likely to be (the year of the price quote is always given). All prices are in $US unless otherwise noted. Most recent prices have been obtained from the Buteo Books Catalogue or the American Birding Association Catalogue. Keywords always first include the major geographical division ("continent") and then a single major subdivision or "region" (one of which must be the category). They are: World, North America, Canada, Eastern USA (of the Mississippi), Western USA (includes Alaska but not Hawaii), North Pacific (refers to islands, not pelagic birds; includes Hawaii), South Pacific (includes Galapagos), Caribbean, Greater Antilles, Lesser Antilles, Central America, South America, Atlantic (refers to islands, not pelagic birds), Antarctic, Europe, British Isles, Africa, North Africa, West Africa, East Africa, Central Africa, Southern Africa, Asia, USSR (former Soviet Union), Middle East, Arabia, South Asia, Far East, Southeast Asia, Indian (includes Madagascar), Australasia.Following the continent and region keywords there then is a "state" level keyword. For most of the world this means the country but in North America it is the state or province, in the former USSR it is one of the newly independent states or one of three broad subdivisions of Russia (see below) and in the British Isles it is England, Wales, Ireland or Scotland. For areas such as the South Pacific, the "state" is usually an island regardless of whether politically it is a country or not. Where necessary, a local descriptor can then be used as a keyword. Some state conventions are as follows:NWT = Northwest Territories PEI = Prince Edward Island WashingtonDC = Washington, D. C. NewMexico = New Mexico New Guinea = island constituted by Papua New Guinea and part of Indonesia (Irian Jaya)Borneo = island constituted by part of Indonesia (Kalimantan) as well as Eastern Malaysia (Sarawak and Sabah) and BruneiEastern Russia = Republic of Russia east of the Lena Central Russia = Russia between the Lena and the Ob Western Russia = Russia west of the Ob There then follows a keyword that describes the geographic level at which the reference is principally oriented: Continent: Africa, North America, Caribbean, etc. Region: East Africa, Greater Antilles, etc. State: Kenya, Pennsylvania, Cuba, etc. Local: Ngong Hills, Denver, etc. Pelagic: can be used in conjunction with one of the above; used for marine birds (only used when reference is primarily oriented toward marine species). Finally, there follows one or more keywords that describe the type of reference:Guide: includes the traditional bird guides. Many guides could of course also be considered as reference books in their own right but if the book's primary intent is to be a field guide, then it is entered in this category. Reference: includes the following sorts of publications: handbooks, state or country bird books ("The birds of Š"), checklists, atlas's. Finding: includes publications that tend to be of interest to birders: "bird finding guides, habitat guides." Vocal: major vocal recordings organized by geographic area (very few suchentries are included) Bibliography: bibliographic complilation A keyword search for "Ontario reference state" would produce major reference books that cover the entire province. "Ontario reference local" would produce all Ontario regional works. "Canada reference state" would produce all Canadian reference books at the provincial level. "Canada reference region" would produce all general books at a national level.
