Biological Richness and Endemism
The units are rather poor in terrestrial species, but have rich
marine life. There are over 100
species of birds reported from the units but very few native mammals (only two
bats are native to the Maldives). A
few mice and shrews have been introduced by Man. Laccadive
species are closely related to mainland India but the Maldives show some local
endemism, including 5 endemic species of Pandanus
(Adams, 1983), two endemic
subspecies of bat and a few endemic
sub-species of birds.
